Botched asbestos removal…how do we clean the air now?
12% frail asbestos removed improperly with vacuum cleaners. Yes it was wetted but fine layer of dust everywhere. How do we clean air in the home now? Do hepa filters filter out asbestos, what filter would you recommend? Thanks. And no we’re not living in the house atm until this is resolved.
Oh and I realize this isn’t going to be an instant process its going to take weeks or months to get to a safe level probably. Cleaning dust with wet disposable rags everyday, but we need to know what a good filter is.
Its not violating the law when the homeowner removes it themselves.
BTW all the contractors in the real world laugh about asbestos and think its a joke. Hence why we weren’t too concerned about removing it.
I’m sort of on the side of the asbestos panic is blown waaaay out of proportion atleast the crystallite type. (the blue stuff from Australia maybe is another story) but i’m staying out of the house until we know more.

call a pro they will come in with a hepa air filter 24 hrs later the area will be safe you are in violation in trying to dispose of the asbestos without a license
Sounds like you have already violated the law, so just call a Pro and have it done correctly. Please don’t say that a licensed company did this.
The safest solution is to call out licenced asbestos removal contractors. Asbestos dust is far worse than solid asbestos and can be easier inhaled. Every time you enter the room – i.e. just opening and closing a door will disturb the dust where it becomes airborne.
Asbestos not only needs removing professionally for health and safety reasons, but also to ensure the safe disposal of asbestos materials. Dumping asbestos is illegal – I am wondering what you have done with the asbestos you have removed? as this could pose a health threat to some other unsuspecting individuals. I.e. Even a licenced tip is not a safe place for asbestos to end up, worse still – children end up playing with the stuff when dumped.
If you hired out your own industrial vacuum cleaner to remove the asbestos yourself – you would also require a respirator, as a bog standard mask will not offer you protection from inhaling the dust.
Any one who laughs at the potential health hazards of asbestos need to be more educated on the subject – and maybe consider the 3,000 people a year that die from asbestos- related disease!
Some examples – A man died from mesothelioma (a deadly type of cancer) through asbestos inhalation. He inhaled asbestos dust from scraping moss off his garage roof – once a year!, and a teacher is currently dying from the same disease, she developed it after years of sticking drawing pins an asbestos – backed board.
It would be fair to say that long exposure to asbestos poses a far higher risk of an asbestos-related disease – but at the same time no one can say (not even medical professionals) that lower exposure is safe, as it only takes one asbestos fibre to be lodged deep within the lung to cause an immflamitory response and disrupt normal cells – hence divide and promote cancer cells.
