What happens if you vacuum without a filter?

I just bought a brand new Dyson DC18 Slim, and I cleaned the filter for the first time yesterday. In the meantime while it was drying, my roomate used it without my knowledge, and now I’m afraid it’s messed it up somehow. I haven’t tried to turn it on again because the filter still isn’t dry. Does anyone else have any experience with this? Did it significantly affect the performance of the machine?

Probably not but your roommate probably wasted his/her time as the dust etc would have passed straight through and blown back out into the room.
I’m sorry that happened! Sounds like an honest mistake … but I’m sure it was very upsetting none the less. I too have purchased an extra filter so that i can use one while the other is being cleaned and/or drying. You can get a good deal on this discount site http://discount-dyson-vacuum.review-mama.com/vacuum-cleaners/dyson-parts-and-accessories. If you don’t find it right away just search for "filter." Good luck and I hope there’s no damage (probably not this one time).
It may spit the dust or things out without the filter. You need the filter to trap the things inside.
Operating without a filter is not good. The filter is before the motor in the airflow. While it may not affect the performance initially, prolonged use without a filter WILL damage the blower (suction) motor, and is NOT covered by the warranty (below).
Some folks buy an extra filter to have on hand just for such situations. They put in the dry one while waiting for the first one to dry, eliminating the possibility of any future "roommate" episodes.

Dyson, Inc. shall not be liable for costs incurred as a result of:
* Machines purchased from an unauthorized dealer.
* Clearing blockages from your machine.
* Use of parts not assembled in accordance with the Owners Manual.
* Careless operation or handling, misuse and/or lack of maintenance or use not in accordance with the Owner’s Manual.
* External sources such as weather.
* Repairs or alternations carried out by unauthorized parties or agents.
* Use of the vacuum cleaner other than for normal domestic purposes within the United States, e.g. for commercial or rental purposes.
* Use of parts and accessories other than those produced or recommended by Dyson, Inc.
