You can get by with either a Hoover or Eureka, but having messed with these infernal machines for more than 40 years, I'd start a piggy bank for that Dyson (my piggy is about 1/3 full).
Put piggy where friends and family can chip in--Piggy could be a clean vacuum cleaner bag! Ya' just learn through the years that quality (notice I did not say "name-brand") is worth the investment. You'd go through several other machines before the Dyson wears out--heck, it might be your vacuum for life!

I checked with Consumer's Report, and it said that the Hoover bagless upright with hepa filter does the best cleaning for the money....even compared to Dyson! I bought the self-propelled model and am happy with results...paid around $150 on eBay. Good luck!

. I clean for a living and we have some very expensive vacuums at work. They work well, but we have these big floor mats in the foyers, and in the winter salt used on the outside walks would get tracked in, these vacuumes just spit it out! I found a little oreck vacuume in the closet, tried it, and it picked it up great, way better than the other ones. I went on e-bay and got a new one for a great price. I will never use anything else. Also they are so light weight, just like the commercial says. Don't mean to sound like a commercial, but I never believed until I tried one.

I have a Bissell Powerforce Bagless. I bought it at Walmart for like $50.00 and I love it. You can take out all the filters and wash them and reuse them over and over.. And if it seams like it is losing power, clean out the hoses. I have had mine for 2 years, and with cleaning the filters and hoses when needed, it still runs like brand new....
