Bissel is pretty reliable for a low -price machine. A lot a Eurekas are so loud it's intolerable. They are practically disposable I know a friend who helps operate a retreat center and uses Dirt -Devils and likes them, but I think they maybe aren't super durable- I've noticed they are now using some non-Dirt Devil vacs. My personal suggestion is to see if you can get a Sharp. Some of the Sharps have truly extraordinary suction, they are very long-lasting and reasonably quiet.Even the belts last so long it's hard to believe ( though sharp parts can be pricey--but it's so rare you need to replace parts on them it's not a big factor. Don't know about a Dyson never used one. Hoover and Bissel do fairly well. Now - if you are also worrying about your bang for the buck - consider how many pets you have, etc. I have 3 long haired dogs, a long haired cat, and 3 kids. The Dyson works wonders. I had a Hoover, it was acceptable but NOT the Dyson. The others? Well, I haven't had any of those brands since I was single - they were ok for an apartment. FORGET ORECK. OK – Dyson – 5 – far and away the best.
